Portland artist Cynthia Lahti is known for her expressive, gestural sculptures and drawings. Lahti’s imagery is evocative of emotional and elemental states of mind. Sculptures in porcelain, raku, terracotta as well as drawings will be exhibited.

"Poetic Ecstatic Truth. It is mysterious and elusive and can be reached only through fabrication and imagination and stylization."
-Werner Herzog

The works in Smile were done under the disguise of experimentation of surface treatments on clay body. They are heavy in their reference to history and criminals in their ruthless theft of it.
There are so many figures out there in the world, in so many poses, wearing costumes, I find the ones that resonate. They come out of the kiln with the weight of evidence of an idea as their fate.
-Cynthia Lahti, February 2009
