A few years ago, I might have wondered when or where a photograph was taken. Now, I ask: is it real?
If photographs are no longer understood as reliable records of reality, then the definition of photorealism changes. If photographs are fragmented, altered, and generated, then what does it mean to make a photorealistic painting? The exhibition brings together works that combine photographic fragments with oil paint, alongside pastel and colored pencil drawings layered over or inset into printed reproductions. I started from the idea that if anything can be a photograph, anything can be photorealistic.
