In these works tonics and cleaning agents serve as icons of metamorphosis and desire. Midst our media saturated world, brands flourish and the magical qualities of products are heightened. Every product promises us a new self with purchase. A life without Odor, a life without Pain, a life free of Feeling. Baptized in the fluorescent and fizzing fluids of the corner store we are assured a sparkling new life. The potions of the body care aisle, glowing bottles of glass cleaner and jars of cold cream are domestic and feminine potions. These contemporary concoctions magnetize with the same powers as witches’ brew. Utilizing the language of advertising to structure my alchemical cabinet, I coopt these iconic structures to endow the ephemeral with material resonance.

Hailing from Seattle, Washington, Isabelle Sigrid Marshall works primarily as an illustrator, animator, printmaker and painter. Her work often combines text and image, and at times includes music and performance. Isabelle received her B.A. from Bard College. She recently participated in a collaborative project with Bard and Freehand Hotels where she completed nearly fifty unique murals in the historic George Washington Hotel in New York City. Her work for Freehand has been featured in photoshoots for Man Repeller, Vouge.com and Architectural Digest. Isabelle’s work has been exhibited in Naming Gallery in Oakland and published in Columbia University’s Journal of Art and Literature. She is interested in how storytelling impacts our self-understanding and the ways in which artists can manipulate normative narratives to create a more expansive media landscape. As a young person Isabelle studied autobiographical comics. Her study of comics created a lasting impression and informed her artistic values of frankness and humor.
