Statement
Emily Nachison creates mixed-media sculpture that pulls from the disparate, yet conjoined, histories of science and mysticism. Predominantly comprised of cast glass and natural materials such as leather and hair, the sculptures and installations reference the practice of mytholigization as a means of explaining natural phenomena and wish-fulfillment.

Emily Nachison was born in San Diego, California in 1984. She received a BFA from the Maryland Institute College of Art in 2006 and a MFA from Cranbrook Academy of Art in 2010. Nachison has had numerous solo exhibitions and has been included in group shows at venues such as the Byre (Latheronwheel, UK), the Museum of Contemporary Craft (Portland, OR), Disjecta Contemporary Art Center (Portland, OR), New Mexico State University Art Gallery (Las Cruces, NM), and University of Nevada Sheppard Contemporary (Reno, NV). In 2016 she was an artist-in-residence at Wassaic Artist Residency (Wassaic, NY) and the Kutztown University Marlin and Regina Miller Art Gallery (Kutztown, PA). She has lectured at the Scottish Glass Society (Glasgow, UK), the American Craft Council (Minneapolis, MN), Portland Art Museum (Portland, OR), Cranbrook Academy of Art (Bloomfield Hills, MI), and the Rochester Institute of Technology (Rochester, NY). Her work has been featured in American Craft Magazine, Interior Design Magazine, Art Ltd. Magazine and Bad at Sports. From 2013-2018 Nachison served as the Chair of the Fibers Department at the Oregon College of Art and Craft. Nachison currently lives and works in Portland, Oregon where she is the co-director of Dust to Dust gallery.
