Marylhurst University opens the exhibition Heather Watkins — Recurrent Work
with a preview reception for the artist in The Art Gym Sunday, February 23, 2014, 3 - 5 p.m. The exhibition continues through April 2, 2014. The artist will discuss her work at a gallery talk in The Art Gym on Thursday, March 6 at 12:30 p.m.
The Art Gym exhibition Heather Watkins — Recurrent Work will present drawings and sculptures selected from multiple series, some of which began in 2008 and continue to the present. In these works, the artist runs carefully structured and varied experiments into the properties and interactions of ink, thread, cord and paper. These experiments include variations in the way Watkins interacts or intervenes with her materials—coaxing the flow of a ribbon of ink across and around the surface of a sheet of paper by tilting and tipping; or soaking cord in ink and laying it down in coils, then waiting overnight for the ink to transfer to the paper below and/or above.
In conjunction with the exhibition at Marylhurst, The Art Gym is publishing the book Heather Watkins — Recurrent Work. The book features an essay by Stephanie Snyder, Director and Curator of the Cooley Gallery at Reed College and was designed by Adam McIsaac / Sibley House. It joins The Art Gym’s more than 65 books and catalogs on art created by artists based in the Pacific Northwest. All of The Art Gym’s books and catalogues are available as downloadable documents on the international library database WorldCat.
The Art Gym exhibition follows several significant recent exhibitions of the artist’s work, including at the Portland Art Museum’s APEX GALLERY; Lumber Room, Portland, Oregon; and the Edith Feldenheimer Gallery at Reed College. The artist has received numerous grants, including project grants from Regional Arts & Culture Council and Career Opportunity grants from Oregon Arts Commission and The Ford Family Foundation. Watkins has been awarded residencies by the Oregon College of Art and Craft, Sitka Center for Art and Ecology, and Caldera. Heather Watkins has an M.F.A. from the Rhode Island School of Design and has been a member of the faculties of Lewis & Clark College, Art Institute of Boston, and Massachusetts College of Art.
The exhibition continues through April 2. The Art Gym is open noon to 4 p.m., Tuesday through Sunday. Admission is free.
About The Art Gym
The Art Gym is a program of the Department of Art & Interior Design at Marylhurst University. It is located on the third floor of the B.P. John Administration Building on the Marylhurst University campus, 10 miles south of Portland, Ore., on Highway 43. The Art Gym is open from noon to 4 p.m., Tuesday through Sunday. Admission is free. The Art Gym programs are supported in part through grants from the Oregon Arts Commission, Regional Arts & Culture Council, Clackamas County Cultural Coalition, National Endowment for the Arts and Oregon Cultural Trust, foundations, businesses and individuals.
