Special guest, Susan Spence, lives in Oysterville, WA and collects rope that washes up on the beach from commercial fishing operations. She takes the found rope, softened by the Pacific waves and studded with barnacles, fishing weights and driftwood, and stitches it into a series of marvelous baskets. Spence plays the color of the rope against the color of stitching to great graphic effect. With her choice and handling of materials Spence’s baskets retain a distinct sense of place and in that way feel like they are very much still of the ocean.
