Two time winner of The National Endowment Artist Award, and the prestigious Rome Prize Fellowship in Painting , Tennessee painter Nick Blosser presents his 5th solo show in Portland. His first Portland show was at Jamison/Thomas gallery in 1992. In this show, for the first time, he will exhibit a larger canvas in addition to the smaller egg tempera on panel for which he has been known and admired.
Blosser's style is very American, akin to the works of Milton Avery, Marsden Hartley and Arthur Dove. Blosser quietly observes nature, picking out pattern and form to make a composition that can be intimate, odd and familiar at the same time.
I enjoy working with outdoor imagery because there is always something familiar and distant in it. We see it and do things in the landscape everyday and it becomes expected. As a painter I want to figure out a way of looking at landscape that is unexpected without seeking out the exotic.
