"Murphy's Artocracy goes "Webby"
Northwest artist Megan Murphy's Web site, www.artocracy.org, has been honored as one of the five best art sites by the International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences, the organization that judges and presides over the Webby Awards, considered the Oscars for Web sites and other types of online media.
Murphy and her site have some heavy competition. Other nominees in the category include The National Gallery of Art, artist Stephen Ensminger, The Museum of Modern Art and The National Palace Museum.
The winner in the art and other categories will be announced May 6.
The judges, a mix of cultural legends and Internet media luminaries who are members of the International Academy of Digital Arts & Sciences, attest to the stature of the awards and the selectivity of the choices. They include David Bowie, Matt Groening, Arianna Huffington and Harvey Weinstein.
Founded in January 2005, Artocracy.org is a virtual marketplace for art founded by Murphy (pictured), a critically acclaimed Spokane artist who is represented locally by PDX Contemporary Art. At the site, viewers can purchase art in an exceptionally high digital format at affordable prices.
