Works by Marie Watt in “Unsuspected Possibilities” at SITE Santa Fe.

I’ll admit it: I’m a sucker for textile art. Quilts, weaving, fabrics of all sizes and shapes.
So Marie Watt’s hangings in the Unsuspected Possibilities exhibition that opened Saturday at SITE Santa Fe particularly appealed. The installation was paired with windows by Sarah Oppenheimer and a fortress-like construction by Leonardo Drew.
SITE curator Janet Dees said the artists were in touch with each other throughout the planning process, talking about how their works would play off one another. All the works deal with found objects that accumulate to create a visual experience, as she described it.
She also said Watt was inspired by Mohawk ironworkers who helped build skyscrapers, and that her installation intended a correlation between those skyscrapers and Native longhouses.
I couldn’t quite see it. But her work, which has been termed “painting with textiles,” sure is lovely to look at.
