"Jerry Mayer and Ellen George: Stand
Visual Arts

Jerry Mayer and Ellen George have done it again. In their collaborative installation, Stand, they’ve managed to turn a really simple idea into a richly evocative visual poetry. With nothing but gently bent cedar planks and eerie lighting, they’ve turned Nine Gallery into an abstract bamboo forest. The lights cast yellow and purple hues across the planks, lending a sense of mystery and romanticism. An ambient soundtrack heightens the otherworldly atmosphere. It seems impossible that Nine’s boxy space could feel so expansive—you get the sense you could keep walking forever, like the kids in The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe. Through June 29."
