CURATOR TALK: Jack Ryan and Jan Tumlir

Jack Ryan, curator and University of Oregon art faculty, will discuss his process for creating
“Of Walking In Ice,” his interest in the artist’s works and fascination with Jan Tumlir’s writing.
Jan Tumlir, art and film critique, will share his perspective as contributor to the exhibition as
a guest essayist. Please join the White Box and University of Oregon in Portland for this reception.
Jack Ryan is a professor of art at the University of Oregon, and active curator in the Pacific North West
Jan Tumlir is a professor of art and film theory at the Art Center College of Design, University of Southern
California and regular contributor to ArtForum, Frieze and Flash Art.
In addition the feature-length film, “Walking to Werner,” directed and edited by Linas Phillips, will be shown
from 6-8 p.m. during the reception and throughout the exhibition from 4 to 6 p.m. on Saturdays
in the Grey Box, the versatile projection room in the White Box.

Inspired by Werner Herzog’s book “Of Walking In Ice,” Sixteen artists explore themes of ice
and travel – through film, sound, installation, painting, photography, sculpture and writing.
