Storm Tharp is an artist driven by ideas rather than specific materials. With an unusual ability to work in a wide variety of materials; he chooses the medium which he feels will best realize a specific idea and feeling. Included in this exhibit will be a giant pair of disembodied eyelashes mounted to the gallery wall, drawings, paintings in oil and gouache.
Tharp’s ideas in this body of work were influenced by Casper David Friedrich and the utopian values of early American landscape painters. Philip Guston and Truman Capote’s - Other Voices, Other Rooms, were in his head as well. Using these influences Tharp turns to his studio and let process drive the direction of work. The resulting images reflect emotional and intellectual exploration.
Storm Tharp has exhibited throughout the Northwest since 1992 and is represented in private collections nationwide. He was an award recipient at the Portland Art Museum’s Oregon Biennial in 1997 and 1999, and participated in the Vermont Studio Center in Johnson, Vermont residency program in 2002 as well as the Oregon College of Art and Craft residency program in 2005.
