Anne Appleby

Statement

I paint plant cycles because they reflect most other life cycles. To recognize beauty requires a state of consciousness that enables us to step outside ourselves for a moment into collective openness and grace. Often the richness of the world precludes that experience. We live in a fast paced and hectic society; we are often in cars and constantly looking at electronic media.

Occasionally we may come upon a flower or a cloud or another human being and, seeing the beauty, enter into that openness. Beauty has a fleeting quality, a palpable fragility.

CV

Before receiving her B.F.A. in 1977 from the San Francisco Art Institute, Anne Appleby spent a fifteen year apprenticeship with an Ojibwe Indian elder in Montana. She learned patient observation of nature from him. Although Appleby’s paintings are composed of abstract panels each essentially a single color, she thinks of them as landscapes. She carefully observes particular plants or particular seasons and uses their colors as they grow and change in works that are particular to them.

Appleby lives and works in Jefferson City, Montana. She has received the SFMoMA SECA Art Award and the Biennial Award from the Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation. She has exhibited Tacoma Art Museum in Washington, the American Academy in Rome, and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and her work is in the collections of the Panza Collection in Switzerland, MART Museo d’ARTE Moderna e Contemporea di Trento e Rovereto in Italy, the Daimler Art Collection in Stuttgart/Berlin, Germany the Albright Knox Museum, the Cleveland Museum of Art, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and the Seattle Museum of Art among others. This fall she will be exhibiting at the Portland Art Museum as one of the Museum's 2013 Contemporary Northwest Art Award recipients.
